Terms of Service
Last updated: September 2026
1. About These Terms
These terms are an agreement between you and Andrew Bach Codes, the maker of OpenHockey Engine (the "Game"). They cover your purchase of the Game, the installer you use to set it up, and the OpenHockey Engine website.
By buying the Game, running the installer, or playing the Game you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not install or play the Game, and contact support about a refund instead.
If you let a minor use the Game, you accept these terms on their behalf and you are responsible for their safety while they use it.
2. Your License
Buying the Game gives you a personal, non-commercial license, carried by the license key you receive by email. One key covers one person: you, or the person you bought it for. In practice:
- Play the Game for your own personal training and fun, on the machines you own or control.
- Do not share, sell, rent out, or publish your license key.
- Do not copy or redistribute the Game, or make it available to people who have not bought it.
- Do not try to bypass the Game's license activation.
3. Updates and Your Key
The installer checks the OpenHockey Engine website for new versions of the Game and verifies your license key every time it installs or updates. A key stops working when its purchase is refunded or the key is revoked (for example after a chargeback or a breach of these terms), and the installer will then refuse to install or update the Game.
4. The Game Is a Simulator, Not Safety Equipment
OpenHockey Engine is a hockey training simulator: it projects the game onto a surface and uses a camera to detect where your puck or ball lands. It is a practice aid. It can misread shots, miscount results, or behave unexpectedly, and it is not a substitute for coaching, supervision, or safe shooting habits.
Nothing about the Game makes shooting pucks safe. Keeping everyone and everything in the room safe is entirely your responsibility, described next.
5. Physical Activity and Your Shooting Area
Playing the Game means shooting real pucks or balls, at speed, in a space you control. Pucks are hard and heavy. A shot that misses the target can injure people or pets and can damage whatever is in or near the shooting area: walls, windows, furniture, electronics, and anything else. Before every session, you are responsible for:
- Clearing the shooting lane and the area around the target of people, pets, and anything you cannot afford to hit.
- Using a shooting surface, net, screen, or tarp that is rated for puck impact, set up and anchored the way the maker of that gear requires.
- Positioning your projector, camera, computer, and any display outside the shooting lane, behind netting where possible.
- Supervising children at all times.
- Wearing, and requiring anyone shooting with you to wear, the protective equipment appropriate for hockey shooting.
6. Damage to Your Equipment Is Your Responsibility
You decide where your projector, camera, screen, computer, and everything else in the room sit, and you decide when and how to shoot. If a puck or ball hits any of it - for example, if you shoot a puck into your projector, your camera, your TV, or through a window - the damage and the cost are yours, not ours.
The Game and its documentation offer setup guidance, but guidance is not a guarantee. Whatever the Game or any setup guide says, making your space safe for puck shooting remains your responsibility.
7. You Accept the Risks
Knowing all of the above, you accept the risks of shooting pucks or balls while using the Game, including injury to yourself or anyone watching and damage to property of any kind. If you let anyone else play, you accept those risks on their behalf too.
8. No Warranty
The Game is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. We do not promise the Game will be error-free, uninterrupted, accurate, or compatible with your hardware, camera, lighting, or room.
9. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Andrew Bach Codes is not liable for any injury, loss, or damage arising from the Game or from the physical activity around it - including damage to your property or equipment (your projector, camera, computer, home, or anything else) - and our total liability for anything connected with the Game is limited to the amount you paid for it.
Some places do not allow all of these limits, including, in some cases, limits on liability for personal injury. If any part of this section cannot apply to you, it applies to the maximum extent allowed, and the rest of these terms stay in force.
10. Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms from time to time, for example when a new edition ships. The current version always lives on the OpenHockey Engine website's Terms of Service page; the installer shows the version you accepted. Continuing to play after terms change means you accept the updated terms.
